Sourced and cultivated in the Western Cape of South Africa, Cissampelos capensis — commonly known as Dawidjieswortel — is a traditional medicinal herb long used by rural communities and indigenous healers. Its robust rhizome is valued for potent alkaloids such as bulbocapnine, dicentrine, cycleanine and others, which have historically been used as blood purifiers and diuretics, and to address skin problems, boils, glandular swellings, digestive ailments such as colic, diarrhea or syphilis-related complaints, and even as a supportive measure for chronic conditions like diabetes and skin diseases. Folk practitioners have also used decoctions or tinctures of the root for women’s reproductive issues — sometimes to assist with labour or to address retained placenta — while leaf-based pastes have been applied topically for wounds or snakebite sores. Modern phytochemical research confirms a complex mix of bioactive alkaloids across the root, stems and leaves, underscoring Dawidjieswortel’s potential as a powerful botanical remedy. However — and critically — the plant is known to be toxic: its leaves are poisonous to livestock and humans, and root preparations have historically been employed as emetics or purgatives, meaning overdose or misuse can lead to severe adverse effects. Use Dawidjieswortel with great caution — only in modest, controlled doses, and preferably under guidance of someone knowledgeable — and avoid using leaf-based preparations internally, especially in vulnerable individuals such as pregnant women or children.
